The 2017 edition of New England’s largest dental meeting will include an exhibit space and educational slate dedicated to dental sleep medicine.

The theme of Yankee Dental Congress 2017 is “Focus. Fast. Forward.” To deliver on the “Fast” component, organizers endeavor to showcase new technology and revenue streams. To that end, the 2017 event will feature the inaugural Sleep Apnea Pavilion, an interactive exhibit space and slate of educational sessions dedicated to introducing dental health professionals to the practice of dental sleep medicine.
“Dentists need to know what’s out there from an equipment and training standpoint,” says organizer Shannon McCarthy. “It’s such a big topic right now.”
McCarthy, who serves as Yankee Dental Congress’ director of sales and business development, tells Dental Sleep Corner that, in its 42-year history, the event has featured a number of courses dedicated to dental sleep medicine. But this is the first year it will get a dedicated exhibit space, thanks in part to McCarthy’s contacts on the supply side of the industry.
“I try to listen to what they’re telling me is happening out in the field,” she says. “One of the dealers said a lot of practitioners were closing their regular practices and focusing just on sleep apnea. I was shocked.” McCarthy’s team went to work finding companies to exhibit and subject matter experts to lead courses, and the Sleep Apnea Pavilion was born. “Some relate to the insurance side. One is laser-driven, one is appliance-driven; all have a different take.”
This year’s event will be held Jan 25–29, 2017, at the Boston Convention and Exhibition Center, and is expected to draw nearly 28,000 dentists, hygienists, assistants, and guests. Exhibits, including the Sleep Apnea Pavilion, will be open Jan 26–28.
The pavilion will host a total of six 2-hour educational sessions, including some concurrent ones. Topics include: “Expanding Your Practice with Dental Sleep Medicine,” “Lasing Your Way to a Better Night’s Sleep,” and “Better Sleep for Better Health with Oral Appliance Therapy.” The pavilion will also feature demonstrations of laser technology and oral appliance design and production, among other exhibits.
